Early in our second quarter-century of existence, Radiant Systems has now become part of NCR Corporation, the 127-year-old company which began a transformation six years ago. Bill Nuti began this renovation after being named as its 14th CEO in 2005. Nestled in the transformation is a decision to focus on a software-driven business model. Enter 2011: Radiant.

In Radiant’s roots — heck, in the seeds from which the roots sprung – you can see a software-driven business. The power of this software, widely recognized by customers around the world as the way for retailers and restaurants to increase revenues and control costs, is a major force behind the decision by NCR to invest $1.2 billion in Radiant. They recognized what our customers often share with us about why they invest – product quality, people, and a vision for practical innovation.

NCR has a rich history in hardware and services. This experience is crucial to Radiant’s customers who operate businesses outside the United States. NCR’s leaders understand the importance of complimenting these software applications with hardware that enables the vertical solution (e.g., hardware systems for banks differ from retail differ from restaurants). That’s why their appreciation and long-term commitment to Radiant’s hardware makes sense. It’s why they insisted on honoring all hardware platforms and commitments until future roadmaps are defined.

Personally, I could not be more excited about an acquirer. There were but a few companies who Radiant fit with as well as NCR. Planning the projects will be crucial. I know we’ve got NCR’s full support and that the Radiant people are geared up for the next set of challenges to meet aspirational expansion plans. I do not know what the next ten years will look like, but I know the opportunities are massive for our customers to gain more value across the globe.
